Investigation: Russia is spying its embassy in Bulgaria using antennas
A recent international investigation found that Russian services spy on their embassies throughout Europe using multiple antennas. NOVA reports that the building in Sofia is not an exception.
The investigation was conducted across dozens of countries. According to him there are 189 antennas installed on 30 buildings of Russian Embassies in Europe that are not used for civil purposes but for espionage. It has been revealed that Russia monitors not only politicians and state secrets, but also ordinary citizens who express a pro-Ukrainian stance.
Journalists who participated in the investigation claim the antennas are being used to identify participants at events that support Ukraine by using the unique IMEI number for each phone. It turns out that many of the expelled Russian diplomatic staff were involved in such activities, and were computer specialists.
The use of facial recognition cameras by Russian authorities is also a topic of discussion. In Moscow, they identify men who are eligible for conscription. They must be between 18 and 27. The technology is linked to a database that allows for easier tracking of recruits.
The Russian embassy in Brussels is adorned with spy antennas to eavesdrop.
An investigation has shown that the technique can intercept military communications and police communications.
On the building of the Russian Embassy in Brussels are 17 spy antennas. This is a record for similar technical devices of a Russian diplomatic mission. Local media conducted an investigation that proved this.
An investigation by a number of European media revealed that the embassy doesn’t need as many antennas to maintain an encrypted link, but they could be used to monitor phone conversations and satellite conversations. BTA specifies that such antennas can be used to intercept messages relating to aviation, shipping, military and police work. .
Belgian security services clarified that since 2011, they use an encrypted connection, which should provide privacy. The services don’t rule out the possibility that the technology has advanced enough in the interim to allow a breakthrough.
Vincent van Kikenborn, Minister of Justice in Belgium, confirmed that the number and type of antennas at the Russian Embassy in Brussels had caught the attention of Belgian counterintelligence. According to him it is difficult to determine the type of equipment that the Russian diplomatic mission uses in the country.
