The Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize – Call for Submissions
The European Parliament launched the Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day.
The Prize is awarded annually to outstanding journalism that promotes and defends the core values and principles of the European Union, such as human dignity and freedom, democracy and equality, rule by law and human rights.
Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said: “Reality is that journalists who investigate uncomfortable truths are targeted for doing their jobs. Daphne will never be forgotten, despite all the efforts made to silence her. The Prize in Daphne’s honour is awarded every year. It is a powerful and lasting reminder of the European parliament’s commitment to press freedom and safety for journalists”.
The prize is open to all professional journalists, and teams of professional journalist of any nationality. They can submit in-depth pieces published or broadcast in media in one of the 27 member states of the European Union. The prize aims to highlight and support the importance of professional journalistic work in safeguarding freedom and equality.
The jury is composed of representatives from the civil society and press of the 27 European countries and the main European The winning entry will be chosen by the Associations of Journalism. The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for journalism is awarded each year at a ceremony that coincides with the anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination.
The award and the EUR20000 prize money demonstrate the European Parliament’s strong backing for investigative journalism, and the importance of a free press. Over the past few years, the European Parliament has warned against attempts to undermine media plurality both within the EU and outside.
MEPs have condemned the attacks on journalists by politicians and others. The Commission was asked to introduce legislation to combat abusive lawsuits. The co-legislators are currently addressing a proposal that was made last year to combat malicious litigation against journalists, activists, and other people.
Journalists can submit articles online at https://daphnejournalismprize.eu/ By 31 July 2023 at 12 PM (CET).
Who was Daphne Caruana Galizia
Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese journalist and blogger, was an anti-corruption activist and anti-corruption campaigner who reported extensively on issues such as corruption, money laundering and organised crime. She also covered the sale of citizenship, and the Maltese Government’s ties to the Panama Papers. After harassment and threats, her murder was caused by a car explosion on 16th October 2017. Joseph Muscat resigned as Prime Minister after the public outcry about the handling of the murder investigation. MEPs criticized the investigation and called for action in December 2019.
Five years after her murder, in October 2022 The Parliament of Malta has acknowledged the progress made in the judicial system and the reforms that have been adopted in Malta. The MEPs regret that only three convictions have been made and insist that everyone involved at all levels must be brought to justice.
