Remco Evenepoel sends a clear message to Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar

A little more than three weeks before the start of the Tour de France, Remco Evenepoel launches an important signal in the race that is traditionally used to prepare for the Grande Boucle, the Tour of the Dauphiné. In the 17.4-kilometer time trial starting in Charmes-sur-Rhône and finishing in Saint-Péray, the Soudal Quick-Step rider won with a time of 20’50”, ahead of 21″ Jonas Vingegaard and 37″ Matteo Jorgenson (both from Team Visma-Lease a Bike), but above all giving 49″ gap to Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who was a bit in the shade compared to expectations.
With his success in Wednesday’s time trial, Evenepoel also took the yellow jersey of leader of the classification, ousting Ivan Romeo of Movistar, who instead slipped to third place at 9″ (Florian Lipowitz of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, 4″ from Evenepoel, moved up to second). Vingegaard is fifth in the overall standings at 16″ from the Belgian, Pogacar is eighth at 38″ behind.
World time trial champion in 2023 and 2024, as well as Olympic champion in both the road and time trial, Remco Evenepoel has his sights set firmly on the Tour de France 2025, knowing he can improve on his third-place finish in last year’s edition. For him, the first real goal could be a time trial, that of Caen (stage 5 of the 2025 Tour), which includes a 33-kilometer circuit suited to his characteristics.
In any case, Pogacar remains the number one favorite to win the Grande Boucle: the Slovenian, who literally cannibalized the season in 2024, leaving rivals few races among the most important ones, has already won UAE Tour, Strade Bianche, Tour of Flanders, Fleche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège this year. At the Tour de France he is aiming for his fourth overall success after those in the 2020, 2021 and 2024 editions: he also boasts two second places, in 2022 and 2023, behind Jonas Vingegaard in both cases.

Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton holds on to Frederic Vasseur

These were the words of Ferrari’s Briton Lewis Hamilton in Thursday’s press conference ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, to a question about the accusations against the team principal made by some Italian media.
“Vasseur is the main reason I am here and I am grateful to him. We are on this adventure with him and I want him to stay, I think he is the person who can take us to the top. I had not read anything, I learned about it here. But these are baseless words, not everything runs smoothly and there’s a lot to do, but no discussion going on about Vasseur”s position.
“I don’t feel a desperate need for a result, maybe from the outside the feeling is different – the Briton later said.
In Spain we had problems that hurt us a lot. The team doesn’t want to talk about it much, but I said at the end of the race that I had never experienced anything so difficult.”
“Then, with the engineers we realized that there had been a problem and having identified it was also a relief. Discussing with the engineers to be able to find a square with the team is the goal and everyone is working towards that. I hope it goes better here this time”.

Italy Under 21, Daniele Ghilardi warns against Slovakia

More painful than expected, uncertain until the end, but the 1-0 win over Romania still opened a fast track for Italy in the Under-21 European Championship. A momentum that must be preserved in their next Group A engagement on Saturday night: beating hosts Slovakia, added to a missed win by Romania over Spain, would bring a dowry of access to the quarters with 90 minutes to spare.
“It will not be an easy game – warns Daniele Ghilardi – however, from the retreat, not least because, as we have seen, there are all strong and organized teams here”. There are two ‘Italians’ on the roster: Cagliari defender Adam Obert and offensive midfielder Tomas Suslov, Ghilardi’s Verona teammate.
The lineup selected by Jaroslav Kentoš, 51, is not easy to decipher given its’absence in the qualifiers. But it promises to be a tough obstacle. Against highly-rated Spain, it showed character and will want to redeem the defeat, which came with a goal conceded in the second half, after managing to climb back from 0-2 to 2-2.
With the boost of their own crowd that will fill the Trnava stadium, they will have to aim to win, and then play for passage against Romania. Ghilardi knows Suslov well, author from the penalty spot of the momentary equalizer with Spain, already more than 40 appearances in the senior national team. “Slovakia has several good players and I think Tomas is by far the strongest. He’s technical and very good in the one-on-one ’one-on-one – explains the blue ’I–ll give some advice to my people on how to stop him”.
“The first game was crucial to get into gear well – Ghilardi emphasizes again, going back to yesterday – We wanted to win and we did, we didn’t concede any goals and we could have scored more. We also had some bad luck by catching two poles, but that” is okay. A starter on his debut, always punctual in marking, he also contributed in the offensive phase by initiating the action of Baldanzi’s goal.
“It was not studied – he admits – because we usually try to play inside, but they were closed and needed some width. I saw that Ruggeri had space, I passed it to him and it went well”. With Nunziata Ghilardi reached the final of the Under-20 World Cup two years ago. An experience he hopes to repeat, perhaps with a different epilogue: “We will try in every way to win this European – he promises – It would be a great thrill”.
