Internazionali d’Italia: Errani and Paolini fly to the quarters in women’s doubles

The Olympic champions do not stop roaring. Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini continue their successful defense of the title they won last year, hitting the quarterfinals at the Internazionali d’Italia 2025. The Azzurri, credited with the number 3 seed, overcame in a real battle the duo composed of Leylah Fernandez and Yulia Putintseva with a score of 6-4, 4-6, [10-7] in one’hour and forty minutes of heated and hard-fought play.
The first set opened with great balance, but in the decisive moment Errani and Paolini’s greater experience and mental solidity made the difference. After being surprised with a break in the fourth game, the Italians immediately respond with the counterbreak and from there on raise the level, closing 6-4 thanks to a series of impeccable service turnovers.
In the second partial, things seemed to be going downhill for the Azzurri, who immediately took a 2-0 lead. But Fernandez and Putintseva reacted with grit and strung together four consecutive games, turning the tide. Errani and Paolini did not give up and found another break, but it was not enough: Fernandez and Putintseva closed 6-4 and took the match to the super tie-break.
In the deciding match, after a balanced start, the Italians take control and lead 6-3. Despite the opponents’ comeback attempt, Errani and Paolini proved cooler in the key moments: Sara held serve twice in a row and gave away three match points, the second of which was the decisive one.
Statistics reward the Italian pair, superior in points won (72 vs. 61) and, most importantly, with a 67 percent return on second serve compared to 35 percent for their opponents. Now, in the quarters, the Olympic champions will face the winners between Pigato/Grant and Gauff/Eala. The race continues.

Matteo Berrettini forced to retire amid tears at Internazionali d'Italia

The Internazionali d’Italia could not end worse for Matteo Berrettini. The Roman tennis player, in fact, was forced to retire in the match valid for the round of 16 against Casper Ruud due to the exacerbation of the problem in the abdomen at the beginning of the second set.
The first set started immediately uphill for Berrettini, who had to save no less than two break points in the first two games. From then on, both players do not concede any chances until the twelfth game, where Ruud places the decisive break, which also gives him the first partial set.
The first set was a tough one.
In the second set, the Blue suffered the psychological backlash by losing the first two games. At that point, however, surprisingly, Berrettini burst into tears and amidst tears announced his retirement due to a flare-up of an abdominal problem.

Bitter tie-break fair for Bolelli and Vavassori in Rome: blue derby goes to Bondioli and Caniato

The adventure of Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli at the Internazionali d’Italia ends in the round of 16. Indeed, the number five seeded players were defeated in an all-Italian derby by compatriots Federico Bondioli and Carlo Alberto Caniato by the score of 7-6 6-7 10-8, after about two hours of play.
Total balance reigned in the first set with all four players being adept at holding their respective turnovers. The match thus slips to the tie-break, where it is Bondioli and Caniato who place the’decisive stretch on 7-5.
The first set is the most balanced of the two sets.
In the second set it is the two Italian qualifiers who get off to a better start, finding the first break in the fifth game. Bolelli and Vavassori’s reaction, however, was not long in coming, as in the sixth game the world number five found the counter-break at zero. At that point, complete equilibrium returned until the tie-break, which was won by the Bolognese and the Piedmontese with a score of 12-10.
The super tie-break also continued point-to-point, with both pairs managing to hold serve. In the closing stages, however, it is Vavassori and Bolelli who are the first to make mistakes, and Bondioli and Caniato take advantage of this to place the decisive mini-break, which gives them the match on the score of 10-8.
The match is won by the Bolognese and the Piedmontese.

Romelu Lukaku is clear about his priorities.

During an’interview with the microphones of “FIFA“, Romelu Lukaku, after reaching 400 career goals, spoke bluntly about his long-term goals.
“I want to enjoy every goal I score and see where it will take me. With time you gain experience and can recognize the dynamics of a game. Everything becomes easier and more fun from that point of view” began the Napoli.
“If the goals I score in the rest of my career bring me titles I will be very happy, because everything revolves around winning. I don’t have any particular dreams, I just want to get well, stay healthy, play as long as possible at a high level and enjoy many more games of this beautiful sport that has changed my life and that of my family” added the Belgian striker.
“From our point of view we are working every day giving our best to win the championship. Now it all depends on the details: physically we are strong, technically as well, we have the right mentality in training and in matches. It was not easy, because we started the season in one way, then we changed our system of play, but the maturity of the team lies precisely in recognizing situations and adapting to various changes. Now we have to be willing to sacrifice, work and stay strong mentally” Romelu Lukaku concluded.
