Lebanon has ushered in a new era of governance with the formation of a long-awaited government led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The announcement has sparked reactions from the international community, including strong backing from the European Union (EU).

High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, extended her congratulations to Lebanon, emphasizing the EU’s commitment to supporting the country’s stability and reform efforts.

“I warmly congratulate Lebanon on the formation of a new government, and wish Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and the entire government full success in delivering on the aspirations of the Lebanese people,” Kallas said in a statement released by the European External Action Service (EEAS) on February 8.

The statement also included specific recognition for Youssef Rajji, Lebanon’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants. “I extend my congratulations in particular to Youssef Rajji for his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, and look forward to engaging with him,” Kallas added.

EU’s Commitment to Lebanese Reforms

Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering support for Lebanon, particularly in rebuilding its state institutions to ensure effective governance.

“The EU reaffirms its steadfast support for the Lebanese people and in particular for the rebuilding of state institutions capable of fulfilling their missions at the service of all citizens,” she stated.

The EU has consistently advocated for a reform-oriented approach in Lebanon, particularly in tackling political and economic challenges. Kallas underscored the EU’s readiness to assist the new government in implementing necessary reforms and reviving the EU-Lebanon Partnership.

“We stand ready to support the new government in taking forward a reform-oriented and forward-looking agenda and to relaunch the EU-Lebanon Partnership, including by holding an Association Council this year,” she declared.

Challenges Ahead for Lebanon

The formation of a government comes amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, political instability, and urgent calls for structural reforms. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam faces immense pressure to address inflation, governance issues, and public discontent.
