Davis Cup: Filippo Volandri keeps his guard up and is candid about Jannik Sinner

The words of Filippo Volandri
With only a few days to go before the start of the group stage of the 2024 Davis Cup, Italy captain Filippo Volandri, speaking at the media day, was blunt about his feelings and the pressures his boys might have as defending champions. In addition, the former tennis player è also returned to the decision not to rely on Jannik Sinner, who will enjoy some rest after his extraordinary success at the US Open.
“Coming back here to Bologna as a world champion team è definitely a special feeling. It kind of passes you through the film of everything that è was the beginning of last year, forò what remains was 2023. Now we are ready to start again with new players and goals. The Davis Cup è particular and è full of surprises. Rankings do not count, so it will beè essential to face every match and every opponent with the same attention” began the Italian captain.
” Jannik has shown that he has very broad shoulders, few people really know what he has been through these months and we are very proud of what he is doing. There was the possibility of having both Sinner and Musetti here in Bologna, but we reasoned based on playing dates. Having them play three times in a few days after a Slam, two master 1000s and an Olympics could have been risky for them. Fortunately, we can rely on many players and that is why we decided to rest them” continued the former Italian tennis player regarding the decision not to call up the South Tyrolean and the Carrarese.
“It’s a privilege for me to be able to play this role and it’s even more of a privilege to be challenged by my guys, because there’re at least nine of them that I could play. If we didn't have this abundance we wouldn't have won Davis last year. Of course, I have not yet decided who will take the field: in these days of training, I want to gather as much information as possible to evaluate” added the Livorno native.
“The’Netherlands è the most well-known and compact team, they have important rankings. There are new teams like Brazil: if they play; Fonseca we will see one of the next stars of the circuit, very dangerous and with a bright future. They are all teams with great doubles, but the great doubles we also have“ concluded Filippo Volandri about Italy’s opponents in the round.

Matteo Arnaldi recovers Gaston and hits the round of 16 in Geneva
Matteo Arnaldi is off to a good start at the Geneva ATP 250. After a surprising elimination in the first round at the Internazionali d’Italia, the tennist from Liguria redeemed himself in his debut at the ‘Gonet Geneva Open’, defeating Hugo Gaston, world number 74, in a comeback.
