Golden Ball, no Italian candidate among men, there’è Manuela Giugliano among women

For the first time since è established the Golden Ball of women’s soccer, there’s an Italian player among the ‘finalists’ that is, those from whom the name of the winner will emerge.

She is Manuela Giugliano, a 27-year-old from Castelfranco Veneto who wears the number 10 jersey of Roma and is also the ‘director’ of the national team.

Also on the list are five players from world champion Spain and five from the United States (including Trinity Rodman, daughter of Dennis, ace of the Chicago Bulls in their heyday) who won gold at the Paris Games.

On the other hand, there are no Italian soccer players in the list of 30 candidates for the 2024 Men’s Golden Ball from which, through voting, the one who will receive the award next October 28 in Paris will be chosen. Last year in the list there had been one, the inter player Nicolò Barella.

For the first time since 2003 in the list of ‘finalists’ released by France Football there are neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Messi: in the last two decades at least one of the two had always been there.

On today’s list are five players from Italian teams, two of them, Roma players Dovbyk and Hummels, who have just arrived in Serie A (Hummels has yet to take the field, he signed today). Also present are Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez from Inter and Lookman from Atalanta.

These are the ‘finalists’for the Ballon d’Or 2024: Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa/Arg), Federico Valverde (Real Madrid/Uru), Phil Foden (Manchester City/Ing), Ruben Dias (Manchester City/Por), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid/Ing), Erling Haaland (Manchester City/Nor), Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao/Spa), Granit Xhaka (Bayer Leverkusen/Svi), Artem Dovbyk (Girona-Roma/Ucr), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid/Ger), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund-Roma/Ger), Martin Odegaard (Arsenal/Nor), Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen/Ger), Dani Olmo (Leipzig-Barcelona/Spa), Vinicius (Real Madrid/Bra), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich/Ing), Rodri (Manchester City/Spa), Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain/Por), Declan Rice (Arsenal/Ing), Cole Palmer (Chelsea/Ing), William Saliba (Arsenal/Fra), Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Inter/Tur), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal/Ing), Lamine Yamal (Barcelona/Spa), Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid/Spa), Kylian Mbappé (Psg-Real Madrid/Fra), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta/Nig), Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid/Ger), Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen/Spa), Lautaro Martinez (Inter/Arg).

Never has an Italian made the final at the US Open

.

Jannik Sinner is aiming to become the first Italian ever to win the US Open final. To do so, he will have to get past Jack Draper. The Englishman is having a sensational tournament. Being a left-hander, he è even more unpredictable in his shots. Reason why the world number one has scheduled ad hoc trainings.

L’azzurro, in agreement with his team, changed his sparring partner for the training session ahead of the semifinal with Jack Draper. It è was decided to field a left-hander on the court against Jannik Sinner, so as to test the azure on the different rotations of the ball hit, precisely, by a player who has in his left hand his preferred hand.

Jannik Sinner does not want to be surprised. Although he knows Jack Draper very well (they are friends, they played doubles in Montreal), the South Tyrolean is taking care of every detail to get to the challenge at his best. He is too eager to earn the US Open final. He would become the first Italian ever to do so since the semifinals won by Corrado Barazzutti in 1977 and Matteo Berrettini in 2019.

On the other hand, Jack Draper knows he has already achieved a huge milestone. The 2001 class è to the first semifinal of a Slam event. An outstanding achievement when you consider that, in other Slams, he è never made it beyond the second round. He has nothing to lose and, perhaps because of this, should be taken with a grain of salt.

More athletic and young team: many changes expected

During Media Day, Messina è dwelt on many aspects, including the new style of play his revamped team will have. Compared to the recent past, the roster è has been rejuvenated and, athletically, greatly improved. All this è has been done to have a’more ù “courageous”.

“This è a team that canò and must run more. On offense, with longs who can run and plays who can push the ball well, we want to make a few more counterattacks” “, the clear words of the white-and-red coach, absolutely not worried about having to amalgamate a group with so many new faces: “Sometimes all it takes is just a click and everything then goes great”.

Undoubtedly, the new Olimpia Milano intrigues a lot. Having lost pivotal players like Hines, Melli or Hall, a lot of players of great potential have arrived. Also very important is the return of LeDay who, according to Messina, “è improved a lot thanks to the two years spent under Obradovic”.

After a full four years, Olimpia is conducting a normal retreat. There are no international commitments for the various national teams and, therefore, everyone is already available to coach Messina. Fans are looking forward to seeing her in action in the opener, next Sept. 21, against Reyer Venezia (match valid for the Italian Supercoppa semifinal). It will be a different Olimpia, in every sense.

Even without Messi, Argentina only knows how to win

Recovering from its victory in the Copa America, Argentina returned to the field for its match against Chile, valid for the next World Cup qualifiers. CT Scaloni’s team, albeit without Messi, imposed itself with a dry 3-0 win, certifying its first place in the standings, with an important margin over all opponents.

Race without history at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The hosts went wild in the second half. Mc Allister unlocked the result at 48′. Then came Julio Alvarez’s goals at 84′ and, in full recovery, Dybala&#39s that è made the final 3-0.

Of note was the debut, in an Albiceleste jersey, of Castellanos, who entered at 89’89; in place of Julian Alvarez. Also on the field was the candidate for the next Ballon d’Or Lautaro Martinez, who però did not find the way to goal. The only negative note was the injury suffered by Nico Gonzalez. The new Bianconeri purchase had to leave the field only five minutes after his entrance, apparently due to muscle trouble.

As is well known, there are several players in the Bianconeri’s house who are currently in the infirmary. In addition to Thuram and Weah, one è just had to stop Conceiçao (he will have; for a month or so). Losing ex-Purple Nico Gonzalez would also be a huge problem for Thiago Motta. The Bianconeri roster è deep but not infinite.
