Tom Pidcock wins Amstel Gold Race

It was expected by many as the day of triumph for Mathieu van der Poel, who was looking for a poker of successes in the Northern Classics after his victories at the E3 Harelbeke, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix: instead, the 2024 edition of the Amstel Gold Race saw Tom Pidcock triumph, able to regulate the small group of nine escapees in which Van der Poel himself did not manage to insert himself.

Pidcock, rider of Ineos Grenadiers, beat Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and Marc Hirschi and Tiesj Benoot (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) in a sprint. With the same time as the winner, Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal-Quick Step), Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek), Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) then finished with the same time as the winner, finishing from fourth to ninth place.

Rounding out the top 10 was Michael Matthews (Team Jayco AlUla), first in the chasing group that featured Van der Poel. The multi-time world champion this time did not è manage to make the most of the work of Alpecin-Deceuninck, paying duties in particular on the Keutenberg.

For Pidcock è the first victory of the season. In the past, the British rider è won at the Arrow of Brabant in 2021 and the Strade Bianche in 2023: in between, in the 2022 season, a stage won at the Tour de France, the one at Alpe d’Huez.
