Italy closes with three bronzes on the last day of the World Swimming Championships

The curtain falls on the World Swimming Championships in Doha and Italy is smiling: 12 medals were won by the Azzurri (three more than in Budapest 2022, the edition in which it had climbed the podium the most times) with Simona Quadarella who, with her two gold medals in the 1500 and 800 style è the real queen of the Italian expedition to Qatar. The last day in the pool saw Italy win three bronze medals, in the 50 breaststroke with Benedetta Pilato, in the 400 medley with a surprising Sara Franceschi and in the men’s 4×100 medley relay.

Benedetta Pilato took bronze in her 50 breaststroke, confirming her place on a rainbow podium from which she has è never been off since è in the national team. “A medal is always needed – smiles Benny, today called to the double commitment with the evening mixed relay that closes in sixth place – I am happy for the medal, forò I am sorry becauseé this is not è the best version of myself”. Pilato, after Federica Pellegrini (10) and Simona Quadarella (7), è became the third Italian to collect at least five individual podiums in the World Long Tub Championships.

A battery to save energy and a night to frame, loaded with revenge against bad luck. Sara Franceschi signs the feat you don’t expect and from lane 8 wins a crazy bronze, surprising opponents and moving her father and coach Stefano, who from the side of the pool seems to believe his eyes, and puts the Olympic pass in her pocket. A medal, against adversity, that of the multi-talented often stopped by injuries, the last one in October, in the moments when she had to take off and now she has done it in Qatar.

The gold è by Britain’s Freya Colbert and the silver by Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko, who was then booed by the audience both at the time of poolside interviews and after the award ceremony. “I dedicate this medal to my grandfather Claudio, who è passed away exactly one year ago, and to my father Stefano who è always been close to me and who believed in me even in the difficult moments – Franceschi says – È an incredible medal, unexpected because I went through a not easy autumn. È also came the Olympic pass and ciò allows me to be moreù serene”. For Italnuoto è the second medal in the specialty and the second bronze: the first was won by Novella Calligaris in Belgrade 1973.

A bit of justifiable fatigue and a backstroke not as incisive as on recent occasions for Alberto Razzetti fifth in the 400 medley, after silver in the 200 butterfly and third place in the 200 medley for a top World Championship. “I was really tired today,” Razzetti commented, “I tried to surprise the opponents in the side lane but I didn&#39t succeed. Too bad, becauseé I did not even go very far from third place. All in all, I am happy: a fifth place in the world championship. Busy week, positive balance sheet. I swam beyond my expectations. I am satisfied”.

The certainty of the Olympic Card in the morning and a sparkling bronze in the afternoon. The mixed 4×100 did not disappoint expectations and climbed to the lowest step of the podium, returning there after the gold of Budapest 2022, dragged by two champions and galvanized by two youngsters swimming in 3’31″59. Ahead were only the United States in 3’29″80 and the Netherlands in 3’31″23. Of the highest level was the final of the Italians. Michele Lamberti (54″28) changes to the sixth place; Nicolò Martienghi inserts the turbo (57″97) and goes up to the third; position that maintain a surprising Gianmarco Sansone (52″14) and Alessandro Miressi (47″20) that thanks to a last fifty in 25″19 also caresses the possible overtaking on the Dutch.

Lukaku to Napoli, Antonio Conte responds in press conference

At the end of the convincing victory against Bologna, Antonio Conte analyzed the match as follows: “Today we had a great responsibility, that of giving a great response after the second half in Verona. I had asked for great compactness from our fans, I had no doubt the Neapolitan fan will always preserve the visceral love for these colors. We still had to give a signal beyond all situations. I had no doubt, these guys are good guys. They are three points that are the beginning of our journey,  my first three points as Napoli coach at the Maradona. I got excited, I was very much looking forward to it”.

For some time there has been talk about the possible landing of Romelu Lukaku in Campania: “I hope that as soon as possible closes the market, for us coaches it is not è easy to create the chemistry and the sense of union. I am not saying anything because é it is not è official, I will talk about it when it is; as I did with Neres”.

“I am happy with Kvara, credit must be given to him for how he trains, the work givesà of fruits. Buongiorno we strongly wanted him, being young he can stay so many years in Naples and in the future he can become the captain when Di Lorenzo stops. Giovanni è was extraordinary today. Alessandro è strong in the defensive phase. I ask him for more confidence and courage in the possession phase. He’s been a great buy”

.

“Today we shot a lot, we were very dangerous with Politano and Raspadori. Against these teams we tried the exits, if you come out well when they press you become dangerous. There’è to work and we will continue to do so” concluded Conte.

Roma knockout, Daniele De Rossi makes mea culpa

On Sunday night Roma è was defeated at home by surprise by Empoli. In the post-match Daniele De Rossi è spoke to Sky Sport: “Granted that then he will want to see it again, on the spur of the moment we lacked energy and intensity. Especially in the first half, the ball flowed slowly: when we went vertical, which è as we had prepared it, we were also dangerous”.

“When you play against teams that can close well, if you dribble slow and don’t do the preventive marking you lose spaces and take counterattacks, if you take goals you lose confidence. Then you don’t even turn your luck”.

The coach also made mea culpa: “It has to be done better training, there are many things that can be improved. You have to go hard, in soccer you have to go hard. And I have to be good at choosing who goes strong. In the second half we didn’t è that we did a particular tactic, we were desperate and we went off the rails: that’s howì you win, tie or get matches back on their feet”.

Among the most overshadowed Artem Dovbyk: “He has to be served deep, in space, with high ball: some pressure should be taken off him in the center of the area, if he fills it alone it becomes impossible for him to find the right spaces. Also in phrasing it seems to me that he did it a couple of times today: he needs to be served better”.

Napoli rears its head again, in Rome l’Empoli does a feat

Empoli’s big win over Roma: Sullo’s team (on the bench given D’Aversa’s disqualification) triumphed 2-1. Emmanuel Gyasi unblocked the match in the 45th minute, then Lorenzo Colombo doubled it in 61′ converting the penalty kick won after Paredes’s clumsy intervention.

Eldor Shomurodov shortened the gap in the 80th minute with a close-range header but it wasn&#39t enough. Very unlucky Paulo Dybala who hit the post in the last minutes of the match.

Raises its head again Napoli, which, after the ugly defeat against Hellas Verona, makes no mistake against Bologna and brings home 3 important points. Giovanni Di Lorenzo opened the scoring, scoring in the dying minutes of the first half, while the double was signed by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The trio è was the work of Giovanni Simeone, scoring in 95′ on an assist from newly acquired David Neres.
