Diamond League, Blue Wave
Athletics, program
The growth of Italian athletics, certified by recent successes and sealed by the triumph at the European team championships, is also evidenced by the ever-increasing number of athletes competing in Diamond League meetings. There will be as many as nine on Friday night in Lausanne in the sixth leg of the world’s top circuit (Yeman Crippa has renounced), and three more on Sunday in Stockholm (and what spikes: Tamberi, Iapichino, Sibilio). The double event will be visible on TV: Lausanne on Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. on RaiSport, Sky Sport Summer and Sky Sport Arena, Stockholm on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. on Rai 2 and Sky Sport Arena.
There is an Italian in almost every specialty. Let’s start with those who raised the cup in Chorzow for the first historic victory in the main continental event: Zane Weir (Fiamme Gialle), over all. The European indoor champion, one of seven individual winners in Chorzow (21.59), is essentially called to an Olympic final in the weight with world record holder Ryan Crouser, the other U.S. Joe Kovacs, New Zealand’s Tom Walsh and all the best of Europe including the other Italian Leonardo Fabbri (Aeronautica, 21.81 in Pergine, European seasonal leader), Croatian Filip Mihaljevic, Czech Tomas Stanek. In Silesia, talented long runner Mattia Furlani (Fiamme Oro) and hurdler Ayomide Folorunso (Fiamme Oro) finished second and seek confirmation: Furlani finds the same opponents as in Chorzow, namely the only one who beat him, Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece, and the two other listed Europeans left behind him, Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer and Sweden’s Thobias Montler; Folorunso is in the 400hs with Holland’s queen Femke Bol. From the Slaski Stadium feat also comes Pietro Arese (Fiamme Gialle), who makes his Diamond League debut in a space 1500 with Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) and newly crowned world record holder in the steeplechase Lamecha Girma (Ethiopia). Instead after 4.25 in Poland she wants to turn the page in La Pontaise Roberta Bruni (Carabinieri), in her fourth Diamond League outing of the season, where Olympic and world gold medalist Katie Moon (USA) never misses. Spectacular at the Tricolori U23 the dance between the hurdles of Lorenzo Simonelli (13.40 regular, 13.29 windy): for his ‘first’ in Diamond League in the Athletissima meeting the 21-year-old from the Esercito finds the Japanese Shunsuke Izumiya and the Swiss Jason Joseph. First 800 of the outdoor season for Elena Bellò (Fiamme Azzurre) after her 2:36.35 in Nice in the 1000: the star is Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson, season’s dominator in 1:55.77. And there is a 400-meter lane in the pre-meet for Italian record holder Davide Re (Fiamme Gialle), strong from a convincing comeback in 45.54: he challenges training partner Ricky Petrucciani (Switzerland) and Dutchman Liemarvin Bonevacia.
Seven days after Chorzow’s 2.29, Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi (Fiamme Oro) is back on the platform: in Stockholm, stage No. 7, he finds an even higher technical level, given the presence of Korean world indoor gold medalist Woo Sang-hyeok, outdoor rainbow silver medalist, New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr with whom Gimbo shared the indoor bronze in Belgrade 2022, Australia’s Brandon Starc, and Ukraine’s Andriy Protsenko. After the victory in Florence, the first seal in the Diamond League, for Larissa Iapichino (Fiamme Gialle) it’s World Championships air again in the long: big match with Olympic and world gold medalist Malaika Mihambo (Germany), Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta, Nigeria’s Ese Brume, and Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers, the only one able to surpass her at the European indoor championships in Istanbul. Alessandro Sibilio (Fiamme Gialle) has never raced in the Diamond League: the debut is not exactly ‘soft’, in the presence of world record holder Karsten Warholm (Norway) and other excellent 400hs performers such as France’s Wilfried Happio, Estonia’s Rasmus Magi, Turkey’s Yasmani Copello. With Chorzow’s 48.14, although achieved without technical perfection, one can think big.

Jannik Sinner, training with a lefty to be ready
Never has an Italian made the final at the US Open
.
Jannik Sinner is aiming to become the first Italian ever to win the US Open final. To do so, he will have to get past Jack Draper. The Englishman is having a sensational tournament. Being a left-hander, he è even more unpredictable in his shots. Reason why the world number one has scheduled ad hoc trainings.
L’azzurro, in agreement with his team, changed his sparring partner for the training session ahead of the semifinal with Jack Draper. It è was decided to field a left-hander on the court against Jannik Sinner, so as to test the azure on the different rotations of the ball hit, precisely, by a player who has in his left hand his preferred hand.
Jannik Sinner does not want to be surprised. Although he knows Jack Draper very well (they are friends, they played doubles in Montreal), the South Tyrolean is taking care of every detail to get to the challenge at his best. He is too eager to earn the US Open final. He would become the first Italian ever to do so since the semifinals won by Corrado Barazzutti in 1977 and Matteo Berrettini in 2019.
On the other hand, Jack Draper knows he has already achieved a huge milestone. The 2001 class è to the first semifinal of a Slam event. An outstanding achievement when you consider that, in other Slams, he è never made it beyond the second round. He has nothing to lose and, perhaps because of this, should be taken with a grain of salt.

Olimpia Milano, Ettore Messina aims to make it run.
More athletic and young team: many changes expected
During Media Day, Messina è dwelt on many aspects, including the new style of play his revamped team will have. Compared to the recent past, the roster è has been rejuvenated and, athletically, greatly improved. All this è has been done to have a’more ù “courageous”.
“This è a team that canò and must run more. On offense, with longs who can run and plays who can push the ball well, we want to make a few more counterattacks” “, the clear words of the white-and-red coach, absolutely not worried about having to amalgamate a group with so many new faces: “Sometimes all it takes is just a click and everything then goes great”.
Undoubtedly, the new Olimpia Milano intrigues a lot. Having lost pivotal players like Hines, Melli or Hall, a lot of players of great potential have arrived. Also very important is the return of LeDay who, according to Messina, “è improved a lot thanks to the two years spent under Obradovic”.
After a full four years, Olimpia is conducting a normal retreat. There are no international commitments for the various national teams and, therefore, everyone is already available to coach Messina. Fans are looking forward to seeing her in action in the opener, next Sept. 21, against Reyer Venezia (match valid for the Italian Supercoppa semifinal). It will be a different Olimpia, in every sense.

Argentina makes Paulo Dybala happy, Juve anxiety over Nico Martinez
Even without Messi, Argentina only knows how to win
Recovering from its victory in the Copa America, Argentina returned to the field for its match against Chile, valid for the next World Cup qualifiers. CT Scaloni’s team, albeit without Messi, imposed itself with a dry 3-0 win, certifying its first place in the standings, with an important margin over all opponents.
Race without history at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The hosts went wild in the second half. Mc Allister unlocked the result at 48′. Then came Julio Alvarez’s goals at 84′ and, in full recovery, Dybala's that è made the final 3-0.
Of note was the debut, in an Albiceleste jersey, of Castellanos, who entered at 89’89; in place of Julian Alvarez. Also on the field was the candidate for the next Ballon d’Or Lautaro Martinez, who però did not find the way to goal. The only negative note was the injury suffered by Nico Gonzalez. The new Bianconeri purchase had to leave the field only five minutes after his entrance, apparently due to muscle trouble.
As is well known, there are several players in the Bianconeri’s house who are currently in the infirmary. In addition to Thuram and Weah, one è just had to stop Conceiçao (he will have; for a month or so). Losing ex-Purple Nico Gonzalez would also be a huge problem for Thiago Motta. The Bianconeri roster è deep but not infinite.
