The Blue must now especially watch out for Medvedev

After the incredible and unexpected defeat of Alcaraz, another star falls at the US Open. It is Djokovic, another big name in the men’s draw. The Serb, who appeared in less than excellent physical condition and unresponsive, è surrendered, in four sets, to the surprising Popyrin, fresh from his title win in Montreal and in an amazing period of form.

THE Serb showed, from the very first exchanges, several difficulties. The Russian-born Australian played at a very intense level, taking home the first two partials always 6-4. With pride, the former world No. 1 fought back in the third set, imposing himself 6-2. Yet another comeback of his career? No, becauseè Popyrin è returned to play at a furious pace, closing the file 6-4 in the fourth set.

For Djokovic a very heavy defeat. For the first time since back in 2017, he will close the year without having won a Grand Slam event. Curiously, for the first time since 2002, there will be no Federer, Nadal or Djokovic name among the winners of at least one Grand Slam test.

An elimination that makes Sinner increasingly the number one favorite. On the Blue’s road, after the missteps of Alcaraz and Djokovic, only the Medvedev obstacle remains, awaiting a match with Italy&#39s Cobolli. “Sinner è the main favorite, but Tiafoe and Fritz are playing well, as are Rublev and Dimitrov. It will be an interesting second week”, the words of Djokovic himself after the defeat with Popyrin.

In the fourth set, Carrara wasted a 4-0 lead

.

Musetti’s adventure at the US Open stops in the third round. The Italian surrendered to Nakashima, who did well to impose himself in four sets after three hours and 13 minutes of play. The U.S. player takes home the pass to the round of 16 thanks to a very solid performance, both on serve (17 aces) and in winning strokes (50).

Upset start for the Italian who, in the first set, seemed little fluent. Nakashima took advantage of this and closed 6-2. Excellent reaction of the azure who, in the second partial, shows his skills, rebalancing the match (6-3). In the third set, Nakashima relies heavily on his serve and manages, again, to put Musetti in crisis, It ends 6-3 for the American who runs away on 2-1.

Musetti doesn&#39t take it and threads four games in a row at the beginning of the fourth partial. At 4-0, the fifth set seemed inevitable. Instead, surprisingly, Nakashima wins four games in a row and gets back in the game. It goes to the tie-break where Musetti seems a bit on his legs. Not the American: 7-4 and match ended in his favor.

For Musetti, a defeat that leaves many regrets. He was in excellent form and, especially at 4-0 in his favor in the fourth period, there was a chance to extend the match to the fifth and try to accomplish yet another feat. Unfortunately, American Nakashima è remained focused at every moment of the match.

Gianmarco Tamberi third at Golden Gala

Gianmarco Tamberi, applauded and cheered by the crowd that flocked to the Olympic Stadium, finished in third place in his own high jump competition in the Roman leg of the Diamond League. The Italian, in fact, jumped 2.27 meters, finishing third tied with Ukraine’s Doroshchuk, failing his three attempts with the pole positioned at 2.30 meters.

Lorenzo Simonelli disappoints at the Golden Gala in Rome in the 110m hurdles. He closes in sixth place in 13.34 on the same track that two months ago had seen him graduate as European champion in 13.05. “This year è started with a bang, too bad for the Olympics because I believed in it – he told Rai – È it was a mistake, it happens but we must not get demoralized. There will be many other opportunities”. Speaking about the evening, he added: “L’Olimpico è always a thrill, but the condition was not that of the European Championships. I am glad I participated, despite everything I am happy because é the audience è super warm”. Frenchman Sasha Zhoya wins in 13.18.

Andy Diaz, Olympic bronze medalist in the triple, wins the Roman leg of Diamond League. To win the Golden Gala he jumps 17.32, while finishing second is Germany’s Max Heb with 17.01 and third is Brazil’s Almir dos Santos with 16.89. “I want to win everything, today I did it in front of this wonderful audience. The world record? I feel I can do it, I feel it in my legs. Today it didn&#39t come out but it will come out soon”. Soì Andy Diaz. “&Eegrave; the first time I compete here, not even Paris was like thisì. Not è the size I wanted but I won”, he concluded.

Leonardo Fabbri, gold medalist the European Championships in Rome 2024, closes the Roman leg of Diamond League in 2° place. The Italian weightlifter è managed to throw up to 21.70 meters, which earned him the place of honor. Triumphing è was, instead, the U.S. Ryan Crouser first with 22.49 meters, a measure that earned him the meet record, while 3° place è went to the other star athlete, Payton Otterdahl, who è stopped at 21.63 meters.

“The fifth throw è was a bad throw, I let myself go and instead it was good, in my opinion almost 23. Unfortunately, my legs were not 100 percent today, but that’s okay, I enjoyed it. È it was nice to get the warmth of the stadium. I want to finish the season throwing 23 meters because I know I am worth it. The past cannotò be changed, you can only correct mistakes”. These are the words of Leonardo Fabbri after his second place in the Rome leg of the Diamond League.

Then, after the nice little joke with Tamberi, who jumped on the shoulders of the Italian during the interview, Fabbri wanted to emphasize how “Gimbo è a great guy, he gives energy to everyone. È he was the first to call me when I was getting results and he did it after Paris as well, that shows the work he is doing”, he concluded.
