The 2023 IJF World Tour season kicked off in sunny Portugal. The stadium was packed to the brim with fans eager to watch the first tournament of the new year.

Under 48 kg class

In the under 48kg category, it was a Kazakh-only final. Abiba Abuzhakynova won the final waza-ari against her Kazakh compatriot Galiya Tinbayeva. The two athletes showed true judo values with a great display friendship and sportsmanship.

The medals were presented by Mr. Vlad Marinescu (Director General of the IJF).

Under 60 kg class

Yamato Fukuda, a young Japanese athlete, won his first Grand Prix in the category of under 60kg.

The transition from groundwork to defeat the experienced Francisco Garrigos was excellent.

Juan Carlos Barcos (Director of International Relations at the IJF) presented him with his medal.

Fukuda said that this result would not give him more confidence, but rather, it would mean that he will be sent to different competitions around the globe in the future, and will represent Japan at each of these events. This makes me more determined and diligent to work harder so that I can handle the burden.

Chelsie Giles, Olympic and World Medallist, started her year off in a great way. She arrived to Portugal as World Number 1 and cemented her position at the top of the world with a brilliant performance.

Lisa Allan, Event Director of the IJF, presented her with her medal.

Giles said, “It is so nice to receive a medal wherever you go.” “I haven’t won many gold medals in my senior years, so receiving a gold one, especially since it’s the very first competition of the new year, is incredible.”

Under 66 kg class

Mukhriddin Tilokov, Uzbekistan, won the under 66kg weight class and shocked former world champion An Baul. His legendary coach Ilias Iliadis, was also thrilled!

Mr. Armen Badasarov, Director and Head referee of the IJF, awarded the medals.

Under 57 kg class

Huh Mimi, of Korea, defeated the current World Champion Rafaela Silva from Brazil with what appeared to be pure determination. She was delighted to celebrate with her coach

Neil Adams, IJF Refereeing supervisor, presented her with the gold medal.

The home team was on a roll all day, performing some of the most slick judo in Almada. This tournament is an excellent opportunity for the young Portuguese team, to show the world how strong Portuguese Judo has become. The next two days are going to be spectacular.

US Open, Alexander Zverev also out: Jannik Sinner thanks.

All-U.S. semifinal at US Open

Another big man exits the tournament. After the various Alcaraz and Djokovic, Zverev è is also no longer in the running at the US Open. The German è was beaten by Fritz in four sets (7-6 (2) 3-6 6-4 7-6), at the end of a match that è lasted almost three and a half hours. A defeat that leaves a lot of bitterness in Zverev’s mouth. The German was aiming to reach at least the final.

A feat for the American who, dragged by the home crowd, won the first semifinal of a Slam event. After winning the first set on tie-break, Fritz suffered the return of Zverev, who took home the second partial with a peremptory 6-3. The momentum seemed to be in the German’s hands but Fritz escaped on 3-0. Zverev recovers but gives up at the più beautiful. Spectacular fourth set. Zverev tries everything but, once again, the tie-break costs him dearly. He loses it 7-3 and says goodbye to the tournament.

Dreams big for Fritz who, in the semifinals, will face the other American Tiafoe who, in the quarterfinals, wins the match with Dimitrov, forced to retire in the fourth set due to a physical problem: 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 4-1 the partials in favor of Tiafoe.

The United States dreams, after 21 years (Roddick, 2003), of an American winning the U.S. Open. In the meantime, it enjoys Sinner who, thanks to Zverev &egrave’s knockout; increasingly serene in his comfortable position as world No. 1.
