Aryna Sablalenka, the 22nd seed from Kazakhstan, beat the 22nd seed Elena Rybakina in an exciting final on Saturday. The women’s game was dominated by two powerful players.

Sabalenka’s 11th consecutive win of the year will propel her back to her career high ranking of #2 – behind Poland’s Iga Swaiatek – as she reaps rewards of an improved mentality in the New Year.

The 24-year-old’s success comes after a period of reflection and change. She often seemed to let her emotions stop her progress on the biggest stage, with three previous semi final defeats at majors.

She shook off her sports psychologist during pre-season, and worked with a biomechanics coach to improve her fiery service. It was a weakness in the past.

Sabalenka said to reporters, “It’s even more enjoyable now after all those difficult matches.” “I feel that I needed to experience those tough losses in order to better understand myself.” It was almost like a rehearsal.”

“I feel happy I lost those matches. Now I can be Aryna, a new player.”

She won the Adelaide International 1 title before the first Grand Slam of the year.

Sabalenka is the first neutral athlete in history to win a major. Due to Russia’s invasion into Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian athletes competed as individuals without national association in Melbourne. She played down the significance.

“I’m sure everyone knows that I am a Belarusian player.” She told reporters that’s all.

Nobody tells you that it will be easy.

She embraced her emotional entourage before walking to Rybakina’s side of court. After completing her first Grand Slam, she fell to the ground in delight. Anton Dubrov, Sabalenka’s coach, shed tears of happiness.

Rybakina, the winner of Wimbledon last year, entered the final with confidence. She was the first woman to do so since Jennifer Capriati did it in 2001, after she defeated Swiatek and Jelena Ostapenko, as well as Victoria Azarenka.

“I was nervous for the last game. I kept telling my self, “Nobody told you it would be easy, but you have to work hard until the end.” She added.

“I am super happy that I was able handle all those feelings and win this one.”

Rybakina acknowledged the hard work that her opponent had put in to win her first major title.

She added, “I hope we’ll have many more fights.” “I look forward to returning next year.” It was a great two weeks and I hope to achieve the same or even better results next year.

The Australian wild card pairing, Jason Kubler & Rinky Hijikata, beat Hugo Nys & Jan Zielinski by 6-4 7-6(4) in the men’s doubles final.
